RNC CONTINUES INVESTIGATION INTO CRASH THAT LEFT CHILD WITH LIFE-THREATENING INJURIES

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) says its Accident Investigation Unit continues to investigate a serious vehicle-pedestrian collision that left a child with life-threatening injuries in St. John’s.

In an update issued Monday (July 27th), the RNC said that, out of respect for the privacy of the child and his family, no further information will be released regarding the child’s medical condition at this time.

The collision occurred at approximately 7:45 p.m. on Thursday (July 23th), at the intersection of Thorburn Road and Larkhall Street. Emergency crews responded after receiving reports that a child had been struck by a vehicle. Police say the suspect vehicle fled the scene before officers arrived.

The six-year-old boy was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Accident Investigation and Forensic Identification Services were called in to assist with the investigation.

Police say information provided by a member of the public allowed officers to quickly locate the suspect vehicle and arrest the 32-year-old driver. The driver failed a roadside screening test before being taken to RNC Headquarters, where he also failed a breath test.

Tyler Julian Day has been charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm, failing to remain at the scene resulting in bodily harm, operating a vehicle over the legal limit, and breaching a probation order. Police also determined he was wanted on outstanding warrants.

His driver’s licence was suspended, his vehicle was impounded, and he was held in custody to appear in court.

The investigation remains ongoing. RNC Collision Reconstructionists continue to ask anyone who witnessed the collision or has CCTV, dash-camera, or cell phone footage from the area around the time of the incident to contact the RNC at 709-729-8000.
