SHOULD THIS ST. JOHN’S INTERSECTION BE REDESIGNED?

The intersection of Allandale Road and Prince Philip Drive has remained a concern for many residents as collisions continue to occur at one of St. John’s busiest intersections.

In 2025, the City of St. John’s identified the intersection as one of the city’s highest-ranking locations for both the number of collisions and injury-related crashes. Since January 31, 2025, around two dozen reported collisions involving injuries have occurred at the intersection.

Several of those crashes have resulted in extensive vehicle damage and multiple people being transported to hospital. In one collision on May 13, 2026, the impact sent a vehicle off the roadway and into nearby trees, highlighting the potential risk not only to motorists but also to pedestrians using the surrounding sidewalks and pathways. Those concerns were further underscored on July 24, 2026, when the intersection was the scene of a fatal pedestrian collision that claimed the life of a 77-year-old man.

With the frequency and severity of incidents, many residents have suggested changes such as a roundabout, revised traffic signal timing, improved pedestrian crossings, or other roadway safety improvements.
