DRIVER CAUGHT AT 200 KM/H ON THE TRANS CANADA HWY

(Oct 9th)
A 59-year-old man from the Bonavista Peninsula had his licence suspended and vehicle impounded after being caught driving twice the posted speed limit on the Trans-Canada Highway near Long Harbour.
At approximately 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 7, an officer with RCMP Traffic Services East was patrolling near the highway exits to Chapel Arm and Long Harbour when an eastbound vehicle was clocked travelling at 200 km/h in a posted 100 km/h zone.
The driver, a 59-year-old man from the Bonavista Peninsula, was stopped and ticketed under the Highway Traffic Act for excessive speeding. Police suspended his licence and impounded his vehicle.
RCMP are reminding motorists to follow posted speed limits, particularly as daylight hours decrease, moose become more active and weather conditions continue to change.
Police note that higher speeds reduce a driver’s ability to react, increase stopping distances and dramatically increase the force of impact in a collision.
Speeding remains one of the most common contributors to serious and fatal collisions on the roadways.
