Just before 5:00 p.m. on Monday (April 13th), Firefighters with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department, along with personnel from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and NL Health Services, were called to a residence on Casey Street.

Upon arrival, firefighters learned that a fire had been caused by fat on a stove. The fire had already been extinguished by the occupants prior to the arrival of emergency crews.

Firefighters were not required to deploy a hose line or use extinguishers; however, crews carried out minor overhaul work, opening up sections of drywall to ensure the fire had not spread and was fully extinguished.

According to an SJRFD Platoon Chief, two people were transported to hospital with minor smoke inhalation, while a third individual was treated at the scene.

Crews also used a ventilation fan to remove smoke from the home. While there was no significant fire damage reported, smoke traveled throughout the residence.

Casey Street between Monroe Street and Gilbert Street was closed for some time but has since reopened.
