DRIVER RUNS OUT OF GAS, BLOCKS VETERANS MEMORIAL HWY AND GETS CHARGED

Police in the Trinity-Conception District have arrested and charged a 38-year-old Carbonear woman after responding to a report of a vehicle parked in an unsafe manner on Veteran’s Memorial Highway early Monday morning.

At approximately 12:41 a.m. on September 7, Harbour Grace RCMP received a report of a vehicle that had stopped and was partially blocking a portion of Veteran’s Memorial Highway near Glover Road after running out of gas.

Police located the vehicle and, when officers approached the driver, observed signs of impairment.

The woman was given a demand for a breath sample as part of a roadside screening, which she refused. She was taken into custody and charged under the Criminal Code with failing or refusing to comply with a demand.

Her vehicle was seized and impounded, and her driver’s licence was suspended. She was later released from custody and is scheduled to appear in provincial court in November 2026.

Refusing to comply with a demand issued by police during an impaired operation investigation is a criminal offence. If convicted, the offence carries the same penalties as a charge of impaired operation.

Police are reminding motorists that impaired drivers place themselves and everyone else sharing the roadway at an unacceptable risk of serious injury or death.

Anyone who suspects a driver is operating a vehicle while impaired is asked to call 911 immediately.
