DRUNK DRIVER CAUGHT SPEEDING 170 KM/H ON TCH IN NEWFOUNDLAND

A 36-year-old Torbay man is facing multiple charges after Placentia-Whitbourne RCMP responded to reports of a possible impaired driver on the Trans-Canada Highway Wednesday evening.

Shortly before 7:30 p.m. on September 2, police received several calls about a vehicle allegedly being driven erratically and at high speeds while travelling toward Whitbourne.

Officers immediately began patrolling the area, and radar captured the vehicle travelling at speeds of up to 170 km/h in a posted 100 km/h zone.

Police caught up with the vehicle as the driver pulled into a business parking lot. Officers observed clear signs of impairment and identified the driver as Stephen Cecil Miller, 36, of Torbay.

Police say Miller was also operating the vehicle with a suspended licence.

He was arrested and transported to the Whitbourne RCMP detachment. The vehicle was seized and impounded, and his licence was further suspended.

Miller was held in custody and is scheduled to appear in Harbour Grace Provincial Court today, Thursday, September 3.

He is facing the following charges:

- Impaired operation of a motor vehicle

- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle

- Failure to comply with the conditions of a release order

- Operation of a motor vehicle while suspended

- Exceeding the speed limit by 51 km/h or more

- Operation of a vehicle without a valid insurance policy

- Operation of an unregistered or unlicensed vehicle

RCMP remind motorists that impaired driving puts the driver and others at an increased and unnecessary risk.

Anyone who suspects someone is driving while impaired or witnesses dangerous driving is asked to call 911 immediately.
