(July 22nd)

Patients and staff at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s will soon begin accessing newly renovated spaces in the hospital’s emergency department, with the first phase of the expansion opening later this month.

The Provincial Government announced today that the new ambulance bay will officially open on Monday, July 27, followed by additional patient care areas on Saturday, August 8.

The upgrades are part of a major investment to modernize the province’s busiest emergency department. The renovations are designed to improve safety, enhance patient care, create a more efficient and patient-friendly environment, and better support frontline health-care workers providing complex emergency services.

The project includes a new high-acuity and trauma area, an assessment unit, ambulance garage, patient entrance, larger treatment rooms, increased privacy through private patient rooms, improved accessibility, modern equipment, and enhanced workspaces for staff.

Budget 2026 includes $800,000 to support the operating costs associated with the emergency department renovations.

According to the Provincial Government, the improvements are expected to enhance patient flow, including the offloading of patients arriving by ambulance from other regions for tertiary care at the Health Sciences Centre.

Additional renovation work is expected to continue, with the full project anticipated to be completed by August 2027.
