The Newfoundland Regiment will once again turn hockey night into a night of giving when they host their annual Socks and Underwear Toss tonight (February 20) at the Mary Brown’s Centre.
The initiative will take place during the Regiment’s home game against the Cape Breton Eagles and will support The Gathering Place.
Fans attending the game are encouraged to bring new socks and underwear to toss onto the ice during the intermission. There is a particular demand for underwear this year. If items are not in their original packaging, the team asks that they be placed in a plastic bag before being thrown.
More than 1,000 unique guests accessed The Gathering Place clothing boutique last year, with underwear among the most in-demand items. The Regiment says community involvement remains a core focus for the organization, and the toss is something they hope to continue as a staple event each season.
“Supporting The Gathering Place is a no-brainer for our organization and the socks and underwear toss has become something of an annual hockey tradition in our town,” said Regiment President Glenn Stanford. “We’re proud to play a small role in giving back to the community and we’re grateful to our presenting partner Cal LeGrow for their support with this initiative.”
Colin McNeil, Executive Director of The Gathering Place, said the partnership connects the game of hockey with dignity and kindness for vulnerable members of the community, while Justin Legrow of Cal LeGrow noted that something as simple as clean socks and underwear can restore comfort and a sense of care.
The Gathering Place operates as a community health centre, offering food, clothing, housing and shelter support, medical and dental services, and counselling to individuals in need across the region.
Puck drops February 20, with fans encouraged to come ready to cheer - and ready to give.
