OVER $3.9M ANNOUNCED FOR WASTEWATER UPGRADES IN NAIN

(Oct 7th)
The federal and provincial governments, along with the Nain Inuit Community Government, are investing more than $3.9 million to upgrade Nain’s sanitary sewer system.
The project will replace damaged sewer mains and manholes, install inflow protectors and complete surface grading.
Officials say the upgrades are intended to reduce the risk of sewer backups, improve the reliability and climate resilience of the wastewater system, and help protect nearby marine ecosystems.
The work is also expected to increase the system’s capacity, providing infrastructure needed to support future housing construction and population growth in Nain.
Funding for the project includes:
- $1,973,731 from the Government of Canada
- $1,578,985 from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador
- $394,747 from the Inuit Community Government of Nain
The federal funding is being provided through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund, which supports water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure needed to enable additional housing.
Nain AngajukKâk Anthony Andersen said the community’s wastewater system has been under significant pressure and that the upgrades will help address longstanding issues while allowing the community to move forward with new housing.
