With children and families preparing for an evening of costumes, candy and Halloween celebrations, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) is reminding the public to take precautions to help ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable Halloween.

The RNC is encouraging trick-or-treaters, motorists and homeowners to work together to make safety a priority throughout the evening.

Children are encouraged to wear bright or reflective clothing, or add reflective tape to their costumes. Carrying a flashlight or glow stick can also help make them more visible to motorists.

Trick-or-treaters should use sidewalks and crosswalks, travel in groups, plan their routes and stick together. The RNC also reminds children to only visit well-lit homes, never enter a home or vehicle with someone they do not know, and check all treats before eating them.

Motorists are being asked to slow down and remain especially cautious in residential areas, where increased pedestrian traffic is expected. Drivers should avoid distractions and never operate a vehicle while impaired.

Homeowners are also encouraged to keep walkways clear, well-lit and free of hazards, use LED candles or flashlights in jack-o’-lanterns, and ensure pets are secured. The RNC recommends distributing only individually wrapped, store-bought candy.

Anyone wishing to report suspicious activity can contact the RNC at 709-729-8000. To report a crime in progress, call 911.

On behalf of the RNC, everyone is wished a boo-tiful Halloween and a safe evening.
