RNC SHARES CHILD SAFETY TIPS FOR PARENTS

(Oct 27th)
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) is encouraging parents and caregivers to talk with children about personal safety and how to recognize potentially dangerous situations when they are on their own.
The RNC says street-proofing can help children recognize and respond to situations that make them uncomfortable or could put them in danger while away from their guardians.
The RNC recommends reviewing the following safety tips with children:
- Memorize important information, including their full name, address and emergency phone numbers.
- Never approach strangers or get too close to unfamiliar vehicles.
- Never get into a stranger’s vehicle.
- Avoid lengthy conversations with strangers.
- Never accept gifts from strangers.
- Walk to and from school or the bus stop with a parent, sibling or friends.
- If confronted by a stranger, do whatever is necessary to get away.
The RNC continues to encourage residents to report suspicious activity by calling 709-729-8000. Crimes in progress should be reported by calling 911.
