6 YEAR OLD SUFFERS LIFE-THREATENING INJURIES AFTER BEING STRUCK BY IMPAIRED DRIVER

A 32-year-old man is facing multiple charges after a six-year-old boy was seriously injured in a vehicle-pedestrian collision in St. John’s on Thursday evening.

At approximately 7:45 p.m, Emergency crews were called to the intersection of Thorburn Road and Larkhall Street following reports that a child had been struck by a vehicle. Before police arrived, the suspect vehicle fled the scene.

Accident Investigation and Forensic Identification Services were called in to assist with the investigation. The six-year-old boy was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police say a member of the public provided information that allowed officers to quickly locate the suspect vehicle and arrest the 32-year-old driver. The man failed a roadside screening test before being taken to RNC Headquarters, where he subsequently failed a breath test.

Tyler Day has been charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm, failing to remain at the scene resulting in bodily harm, operating a vehicle over the legal limit, and breaching a probation order. Police also determined he was wanted on outstanding warrants.

His driver’s licence was suspended, his vehicle was impounded, and he was held in custody to appear in court.

The investigation remains ongoing. RNC Collision Reconstructionists are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or has video footage, including CCTV, dash-camera, or cell phone footage from the area around the time of the incident, to contact the RNC at 709-729-8000.
