ONE DECEASED, ANOTHER SERIOUSLY INJURED AFTER FIERY TCH CRASH IN NEWFOUNDLAND

A 47-year-old man is dead and another truck driver remains in hospital with serious injuries following a collision involving two commercial transport vehicles on the Trans-Canada Highway near Gull Pond Bridge.

Just after 2:15 a.m. on July 28, Grand Falls-Windsor, Baie Verte and Springdale RCMP responded to a report of a collision between two tractor trailers on the Trans-Canada Highway near Gull Pond Bridge.

When officers arrived, both commercial vehicles were fully engulfed in flames.

RCMP Traffic Services Central, the Badger Volunteer Fire Department, the Springdale Volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services also responded to the scene.

Police say the driver of a westbound tractor trailer sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital by ambulance, where he continues to receive care and treatment.

The driver of the eastbound truck, a 47-year-old man, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A Collision Reconstructionist with RCMP Traffic Services attended to assist with the investigation, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has been engaged.

The collision forced the closure of the Trans-Canada Highway for several hours while police investigated and provincial agencies assessed the condition of the roadway following the fire.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

RCMP said that, out of respect for the privacy of those involved and their loved ones, no additional details are being released at this time.

RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador has extended its sincere condolences to the family, friends and community of the deceased.
