WILDFIRE THREAT MINIMAL IN PORT HOPE SIMPSON

The wildfire threat in Port Hope Simpson has been reduced to minimal following several days of challenging conditions and significant firefighting efforts, according to MHA Lisa Dempster.

In a statement, Dempster said the threat has been reduced due to suppression efforts, cooler temperatures and the resources currently in place.

Crews continue to work on hotspots and mop-up operations following the fire.

The Trans-Labrador Highway is now open through the area, although motorists are being asked to travel at reduced speeds and use extra caution. Forestry officials remain active in the area while work continues.

Dempster said the past several days have been stressful and uncertain for residents, with hot and dry weather, southwest winds and the wildfire burning dangerously close to the road and nearby gas stations.

She also highlighted the response from Port Hope Simpson and neighbouring communities, saying the situation demonstrated the strength of the region’s community spirit.

Dempster thanked Forestry personnel, particularly local staff, for their efforts in battling the fire and protecting the community.

She also recognized Port Hope Simpson Town Council for its leadership and communication throughout the situation, as well as volunteer firefighters from Port Hope Simpson, Mary’s Harbour and Charlottetown who assisted on the front lines.

Transportation and JCL personnel were also thanked for helping maintain the safety of the travelling public during detours and traffic direction.

Dempster additionally expressed appreciation to communities that opened their doors to provide shelter and support to those affected.

While the immediate wildfire threat has been significantly reduced, crews remain on the ground continuing their work.

Dempster described the response as a demonstration of courage, cooperation and community spirit, saying the situation served as a reminder of the strength of Port Hope Simpson and its neighbouring communities.
