RNC BOOSTING SCHOOL ZONE PATROLS

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) is increasing patrols in school zones as thousands of students prepare to return to classes in the coming days.

With students returning to school, motorists can expect a significant increase in traffic, particularly during the morning commute. The RNC is reminding drivers to remain alert, as some students may be distracted while walking near intersections, crosswalks and parking lots.

Police are reminding road users that it is illegal to pass a stopped school bus when its stop sign is extended and its lights are flashing. This applies to all lanes in both directions. The penalty for passing a school bus is six demerit points and up to $1,200 in fines.

Drivers are also reminded not to use mobile phones or electronic devices while driving, to reduce their speeds in school zones and to obey posted speed limits. Fines for speeding in school zones are double those of a regular speeding ticket.

The RNC is also reminding motorists to pay attention to road signs and crossing guards. Failing to stop for a crossing guard can result in two demerit points and up to $400 in fines.

Parents are encouraged to speak with children about traffic safety, including the proper use of crosswalks and school bus safety. Whenever possible, younger children should be walked to the bus stop and supervised while waiting.

Students are reminded to use marked crosswalks and wait for vehicles to come to a complete stop before crossing. Police also encourage students to make eye contact with drivers to ensure they have been seen and to stay off phones and electronic devices when near roadways and in parking lots.

The RNC says that by working together, the public can help make the school year a safe one.

The public is also reminded to report dangerous and impaired driving directly to police by calling 911.
