The Portugal Cove - St. Philip’s Volunteer Fire Department is marking a significant day for its members and the community with the promotion of Captain BJ Hibbs to Deputy Chief, effective September 8, 2026.


The department expressed its congratulations to Deputy Chief Hibbs, recognizing the leadership, dedication, and continued commitment he brings to both the department’s members and the community it serves.


“Congratulations, Deputy Chief Hibbs,” the department said, as it welcomed the new role and looked ahead to his continued leadership and service.


September 8 also marks the official final day of service for former Fire Chief and Deputy Chief Fred Hollett.


Hollett’s commitment to the fire service and the Portugal Cove - St. Philip’s Volunteer Fire Department spans decades. Throughout his years of service, his leadership, dedication, and countless contributions have left a lasting mark on the department, the community, and the province.


The department expressed its gratitude to Hollett for his many years of service and dedication as he begins his retirement.


The Portugal Cove - St. Philip’s Volunteer Fire Department is now celebrating both milestones: welcoming Deputy Chief BJ Hibbs into his new leadership role while recognizing and thanking Fred Hollett for his decades of dedicated service.


Members of the community are invited to join the department in congratulating Deputy Chief Hibbs and wishing Fred Hollett all the very best in his retirement.
