DRIVER CAUGHT AT 133KM/H NEAR RED BAY

Forteau RCMP suspended the licence of a 21-year-old Quebec man Tuesday morning after he was caught travelling more than 50 km/h over the posted speed limit.

Shortly after 11:00 a.m. on September 8, an officer patrolling Route 510 just north of Red Bay captured a minivan travelling 133 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.

The 21-year-old driver was issued a ticket for speeding, and his licence was suspended roadside.

Under the Highway Traffic Act, drivers caught travelling 51 km/h or more above the posted speed limit can face an immediate licence suspension, vehicle impoundment and demerit points.

RCMP say speed is also one of the most common contributors to serious roadway incidents, increasing the risk of collisions and potentially resulting in severe or life-threatening consequences.

Drivers are reminded to slow down and make safe choices while travelling on Newfoundland and Labrador roads.
