BASEMENT APARTMENT FIRE DISPLACES FIVE RESIDENTS & TWO PETS

At approximately 5:40 p.m. on Friday (April 24th), Firefighters with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD), along with other emergency services, were called to the scene of a structure fire on Mundy Pond Road near Coefield Street in St. John’s.


Upon arrival, firefighters located an active fire in the kitchen area of a basement apartment. Initial reports indicated that three residents and two pets had already evacuated the home prior to crews arriving. Firefighters quickly deployed attack lines and established a water supply, gaining access to the unit and working to bring the fire under control.


The fire was successfully contained to the kitchen of the basement unit, preventing it from spreading further throughout the home. However, An SJRFD Platoon Chief confirmed there was smoke damage to the upper level of the residence.


An SJRFD Platoon Chief confirmed later at the scene, that In total, five residents and two pets were displaced as a result of the fire, three occupants from the upper level and two from the basement apartment. All individuals and animals were reported safe and unharmed, with no injuries.


Firefighters remained on scene for an extended period to ensure the fire was fully extinguished, checked for any potential extension, and carry out ventilation of the property.


Mundy Pond Road between Blackmarsh Road and Coefield Street was closed for some time until the scene was cleared.
