As daylight saving time comes to an end this weekend, the St. John’s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD) is reminding residents to change more than just their clocks.

On Sunday, November 1, 2026, daylight saving time ends at 2:00 a.m., meaning clocks will be turned back one hour.

The SJRFD is encouraging residents to use the time change as an opportunity to replace the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms.

Fresh batteries are necessary to ensure alarms remain operational and can alert occupants to potential dangers, giving families valuable time to escape during an emergency.

The department is also reminding residents that batteries of any type should never be disposed of in the garbage, as they can pose a serious fire hazard in homes, communities and landfills.

Batteries are considered household hazardous waste and can be dropped off free of charge at the Robin Hood Bay Waste Management Facility on Wednesdays and Saturdays between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
