(Oct 31st)

Motorists are advised to use caution as heavy rainfall continues across the Avalon Peninsula, resulting in water accumulation on roadways and an increased risk of hydroplaning.

Several collisions have been reported throughout the afternoon, including:

- 12:00 p.m; A collision on the Trans-Canada Highway near Soldiers Pond.

- 12:55 p.m; A collision on the Outer Ring Road in St. John’s, where eastbound traffic was significantly slowed between Topsail Road and Thorburn Road.

- 1:00 p.m.; A collision on Kenmount Road near Mount Carson Avenue.

Hydroplaning is suspected to have contributed to at least one of these collisions, although the exact causes have not been confirmed.

Motorists are encouraged to reduce their speed, maintain a safe following distance and watch for areas of standing water.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR VEHICLE BEGINS TO HYDROPLANE:

If your vehicle begins to hydroplane, remain calm, gradually ease your foot off the accelerator and keep the steering wheel steady, pointing in the direction you want to travel. Avoid sudden steering movements or hard braking, as these can cause you to lose further control. Once your tires regain traction, gently adjust your speed and steering as needed.
