KIDS HIT THE STREETS FOR HALLOWEEN – SAFETY REMINDERS FOR TRICK-OR-TREATERS AND MOTORISTS

Halloween is here, and children across Newfoundland and Labrador are getting ready to hit the streets for an evening of costumes, candy and trick-or-treating!
With increased pedestrian traffic expected throughout residential neighbourhoods this evening, families, motorists and homeowners are reminded to take a few extra precautions to help keep everyone safe.
For trick-or-treaters and families:
- Wear bright or reflective clothing and carry a flashlight or glow stick.
- Use sidewalks and crosswalks whenever possible.
- Travel in groups and stick to familiar neighbourhoods.
- Only visit well-lit homes and never enter a stranger’s home or vehicle.
- Have an adult check treats before eating them.
For motorists:
- Slow down and use extra caution in residential areas.
- Watch carefully for children crossing streets or walking between parked vehicles.
- Avoid distractions and remain alert, especially after dark.
- Never drive while impaired.
For homeowners:
- Keep walkways and entrances clear and well-lit.
- Use battery-operated candles in Halloween decorations.
- Secure pets to prevent unexpected encounters with visitors.
- Hand out individually wrapped, store-bought treats.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) also reminds residents that suspicious activity can be reported by calling 709-729-8000. For emergencies or crimes in progress, call 911.
Most importantly, have fun, look out for one another and help make Halloween a safe and enjoyable evening for everyone!
