WET ROADS LEAD TO REPORTED COLLISIONS ACROSS METRO

Numerous motor vehicle collisions were reported across the Metro region between Saturday and Monday, Labour Day, as a weather system moved through the area, bringing periods of significant rainfall and creating hazardous driving conditions for motorists.

On Saturday, September 5th, shortly before noon, emergency crews were called to a reported motor vehicle collision on the Outer Ring Road between Aberdeen Avenue and Logy Bay Road in St. John’s. Heavy rainfall was occurring at the time, in some sections of the highway. No further information is available regarding the incident.

Emergency crews also responded to three separate collisions later Saturday, all occurring on surface metro streets. No significant injuries were noted in those incidents, with roads also wet at the time.

Early Sunday morning, shortly after 5:00 a.m., emergency crews responded to a reported collision on the Outer Ring Road between Allendale Road and Team Gushue Highway. Roads were allegedly wet at the time, and no further information is available.

At approximately 9:00 a.m. Sunday, another reported collision occurred on the Outer Ring Road near the Aberdeen Avenue exit. Roads were extremely wet at the time. No further information is available regarding that incident.

Just before 6:50 p.m. Sunday, emergency crews responded to a single-vehicle crash on Pitts Memorial Drive eastbound between the Kilbride and Downtown St. John’s exits. Roads were wet, and there were no serious injuries known.

Less than two hours later, just before 8:00 p.m., emergency crews were called to another collision that appeared to involve a single vehicle on Pitts Memorial Drive westbound, narrowly in the same area. No serious injuries were known. The highway was blocked for a short period while the roadway was being cleared.

On Monday, September 7th, Labour Day, shortly before 8:00 a.m., emergency crews responded to another single-vehicle crash on Pitts Memorial Drive eastbound between the Ruth Avenue and Richard Nolan Drive exits.

Roads were wet at the time, and hydroplaning was considered very possible in the reported collisions throughout the weekend. Use caution when conditions deteriorate and remember when approaching an emergency scene, slow down and move over.

Rain continued on and off throughout Monday before conditions began clearing during the afternoon.
