Lewisporte RCMP arrested an 81-year-old man Saturday night after responding to a report of a suspected impaired driver.
Shortly after 9:00 p.m. on August 22, police received a report of a possible impaired driver who appeared to be stuck near a wooded area. Officers began patrols and located the described vehicle a short time later.
A traffic stop was conducted, and officers observed signs of impairment. The driver failed a roadside breath test and was placed under arrest for impaired operation.
He was transported to the RCMP detachment, where he provided additional samples that were more than twice the legal limit.
The man was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in provincial court in November 2026 to face charges of impaired operation and impaired operation over 80mg%.
His vehicle was seized and impounded, and his driver’s licence was suspended.
RCMP remind motorists that driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol puts the driver and everyone else on the roadway at unnecessary and unacceptable risk of serious injury or death.
Anyone who suspects a driver is operating a vehicle while impaired is asked to call 9-1-1 immediately.
