The St. John’s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD) is reminding residents to use extra caution outdoors as the Provincial Fire Index is currently rated “VERY HIGH” in the area.
Under the current conditions, no open fires are permitted, including fires with a permit. Outdoor wood-burning appliances are also not permitted.
Residents are also reminded not to burn brush, leaves or other debris, as fires can start easily, spread quickly and become difficult to control.
Propane appliances, as well as charcoal and propane BBQs, are permitted but must be kept at least 3.5 metres away from trees, brush and other flammable materials.
Any coals from BBQs or other burning appliances must be completely extinguished before being safely discarded.
SJRFD is encouraging residents to be especially careful with anything that creates heat or sparks near dry vegetation.
Residents are reminded to check the Provincial Fire Index daily before planning any outdoor burning, as conditions can change quickly.
