A home was destroyed by fire Wednesday night in the Airport Heights community of St. John’s.

Shortly before 9:30 p.m. on Feb. 4, firefighters with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD), along with personnel from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) and NL Health Services (NLHS), responded to reports of a structure fire on Penetanguishene Road at the corner of Airport Heights Drive.

Upon arrival, crews encountered an active fire inside the home. As firefighters deployed equipment, intense flames burst through the front corner of the structure.

Firefighters quickly launched an aggressive attack using multiple hose lines and established a water supply line to ensure sufficient water flow to combat the blaze.

The resident, the only occupant of the home, was outside when emergency crews arrived. As a precaution, the individual was transported to hospital.

Airport Heights Drive and the lower end of Penetanguishene Road were closed to traffic while firefighting operations were underway.

The home sustained extensive fire, smoke, and water damage and was destroyed by the fire.
