Just after lunchtime today (February 14), the St. John’s Regional Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire in a second-floor unit of an apartment building on Keane Place.
Upon arrival, crews confirmed a fire inside the unit. The building’s sprinkler system activated and successfully extinguished the majority of the flames before firefighters completed suppression and ventilation operations.
Smoke traveled throughout the building, resulting in heavy smoke conditions in multiple areas. The affected apartment sustained significant fire and smoke damage, while units below experienced considerable water damage due to sprinkler activation.
A number of residents have been displaced, however exact figures are not yet known. A Metrobus has been called to the scene to provide temporary shelter for residents until the Canadian Red Cross can assist with accommodations for those impacted.
There are no reported injuries at this time.
