The St. John’s Regional Fire Department responded to a report of an electrical fire just before 8:30 p.m. on July 17th. Upon arrival, crews discovered an electric bike on fire inside the attached garage of a residential property.
According to a Platoon Chief with the fire department, the fire originated from the bike’s charger. The heat from the charger caused the seat of the electric bike to ignite, as the charger was laid on it. The incident involved a budget-model e-bike, which the Platoon Chief noted may have fewer built-in safety features compared to higher-end models.
Fire crews were able to contain the blaze to the garage, which sustained only minor fire damage. No injuries were reported.
The Platoon Chief emphasized the importance of consumers being cautious about the electric bikes they purchase, advising the public to verify that products meet proper safety standards.
Residents are reminded to follow manufacturer guidelines when charging electric vehicles and to avoid leaving them unattended while charging.
