Five people were displaced following a house fire on University Avenue in St. John’s on the night of March 5, 2025. St. John’s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD) responded to reports of the fire just before 9:30 PM and arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the structure, as well as significant smoke inside the building.

Upon arrival, the three tenants in the upstairs apartment had already evacuated, but firefighters had to alert the two residents in the basement apartment about the fire. The fire, which appeared to have originated in the kitchen, was quickly brought under control. However, there was significant fire and water damage to the property.

No injuries were reported. The Red Cross was called to assist the five displaced individuals. The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) was also on scene to file a report and take statements from the residents.

University Avenue was briefly closed during the response but has since been reopened to traffic. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
