A dramatic scene unfolded in the east end of St. John’s Saturday morning after a fire tore through a row of townhouses, sending thick black smoke into the sky.

Just after 10:40 a.m., firefighters with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD) were called to Blackwood Place, where two end units of a residential townhouse row were fully engulfed in flames upon their arrival. Crews quickly sprang into action, deploying multiple attack lines and securing a water supply to knock back the intense flames. Fire officials say at least five people were home at the time of the fire. All occupants managed to escape without injury. One of the affected units had been vacant due to a previous fire that occurred in 2024. The other unit, fully occupied, was destroyed by the blaze.

Firefighters remained on the scene into the afternoon, working to extinguish hotspots and conduct a thorough overhaul of the affected area. While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, officials have confirmed there were no injuries.

This is the second fire to impact the property in recent years, and fire investigators will be working to determine whether there is any connection between the two incidents.

More details will be provided as they become available.
