A major overnight fire has destroyed a privately owned fish plant in the St. Mary’s community. The blaze broke out just before 9 p.m., with Riverhead Fire Department receiving the page and responding.

Crews initially attempted an offensive attack; however, with sustained winds over 50 km/h and gusts over 90 km/h, combined with intense heat from the fire, conditions quickly became too dangerous. Firefighters were forced to transition to a defensive operation and monitor the blaze as it burns down. Suppression efforts are expected before winds shift inland, which could carry debris and ash toward nearby homes. The building is confirmed to be a total loss.

St. Joseph’s and St. Vincent’s - St. Stephen’s - Peter’s River volunteer fire departments also responded, but were cleared after it was determined additional crews would not be required for the defensive operation, allowing them to free up resources for their communities. Riverhead Fire Department and RCMP remain on scene.

Riverhead firefighters stated that there was nobody in the building at the time of the fire. However, it is believed that workers were inside the building earlier today.

Residents in the area experienced power outages due to serious weather conditions, and heavy smoke reduced visibility on nearby roads from the blaze.

This is a developing story. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
