St. John's N.L – On Monday (June 2nd), Firefighters were called to a house fire in the centre-city of St. John's on Monday. The call came in shortly before 9:00 p.m. after a neighbour spotted smoke coming from the rear of a residence at 34 Suvla Street.

Crews from the St. John’s Regional Fire Department responded within minutes to find heavy smoke and visible flames at the back of the home. Firefighters launched an aggressive attack from both inside and the rear of the property to contain the blaze.

Platoon Chief Derek Hunt confirmed that the four residents of the home were not inside at the time of the fire. However, four family pets were in the house—three managed to escape, but sadly, one was found deceased. Platoon Chief also stated there was extensive fire, water and smoke damage in the home. There were no injuries reported..

Firefighters from four separate stations worked for a few hours to bring the fire under control and extinguish any lingering hot spots. The scene has since been handed over to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) for further investigation.

The cause of the fire has not been confirmed by officials.
