Firefighters with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire on Belfast Street just after 3:40 p.m. on December 29.
Upon arrival, firefighters located the active fire inside an attached garage, with smoke visible coming from the structure. The homeowner was inside the residence at the time and reported smelling smoke before checking the garage, where she discovered a fire in the corner near the hot water boiler.
The homeowner immediately called 911, safely evacuated the residence with her dog, and was not injured.
Fire crews were able to contain the blaze to the garage area. While there was significant fire, smoke, and water damage within the garage, only minimal smoke entered the main living area of the home, and no fire damage was reported inside the residence.
The occupants are not expected to be displaced for an extended period.
Belfast Street was temporarily closed to traffic while firefighters worked to extinguish the fire and ensure the scene was safe.
