A routine workplace lottery pool has turned into a major payday for nine co-workers in Conception Bay South, Newfoundland and Labrador

The group, who call themselves Hayward’s Group, recently claimed a $1-million jackpot in Atlantic 49. The pool includes brothers Tony and Allan Porter, along with Ed Pike, Colin Harvey, Wayne Pippy, Neil Porter, Kyle Peddle, Jonathan Summers and Dennis Eason.

According to Tony Porter, the moment they realized they had won was unforgettable.

After checking the numbers, he immediately contacted his brother Allan. The pair had the ticket validated before returning to work to begin phoning the rest of the group.

“Everyone was excited and over the moon,” he said, noting that a few members needed convincing before the reality of the win sank in.

Atlantic 49 is a draw game available exclusively in Atlantic Canada. Players can purchase it on its own or add it to a Lotto 6/49 ticket. The game offers a $1-million grand prize and guarantees a $25,649 prize in every draw.

In addition to landing the jackpot, the winning ticket also earned smaller prizes on TAG and Lotto 6/49. Altogether, the group’s total payout came to $1,000,013.

Jonathan Summers admitted he had trouble believing the news at first, saying it took some time to fully process the win.

As for what comes next, members of the group say their shares will go toward a mix of practical and personal goals, from purchasing homes and vehicles to setting aside money for children’s education and booking long-awaited vacations.

What began as a simple office tradition has now become a life-changing experience for the co-workers, one they’ll always share together.
