Goulds, NL – September 13, 2025 – A 53-year-old man was successfully rescued from Second Pond near Donovan’s Road in the Goulds on Saturday evening following a quick response from emergency services.

Shortly before 7:30 p.m., firefighters from the St. John’s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD) and the Goulds Volunteer Fire Department (GVFD) responded to reports of a male in distress in the water. Initial information indicated the individual was approximately 300 to 400 feet from shore and showing signs of distress.

As crews were en route, further details confirmed that the man was wearing a life-jacket and was holding onto a nearby kayak with a good samaritan on board who potentially saved his life before emergency crews could arrive

Firefighters from the Goulds Volunteer Fire Department were first to arrive on the scene. They immediately deployed a Hamacho board, a hard plastic device designed for rapid deployment in water rescue scenarios, prior to the arrival of a rescue boat. Within three minutes, firefighters had successfully reached the man and brought him safely to shore.

Once on land, emergency crews made the man comfortable while awaiting an ambulance. Upon arrival, paramedics with NL Health Services, assisted by firefighters, placed the man on a stretcher and transported him to the hospital for assessment.

The individual showed no signs of hypothermia or physical injuries, but he was taken to hospital to be observed as a precaution.
