ST. JOHN’S, NL — A fire broke out in a vacant home on Livingstone Street early Saturday morning, prompting a response from the St. John’s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD).
Firefighters were called to the scene just west of Lime Street shortly after 8:00 a.m. on September 6th, after a neighbour alerted authorities upon hearing someone shouting about a fire.
When crews arrived, they found smoke coming from the boarded-up three-storey townhouse. Firefighters quickly entered the building and were able to bring the blaze under control. According to officials, the fire appeared to have started underneath a set of stairs and spread into the ceiling.
A SJRFD Platoon Chief confirmed that multiple individuals had been using the vacant property for shelter. While one person is known to have escaped the blaze, it is not yet clear how many others may have been inside at the time. No injuries have been reported.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
