Emergency crews responded to the scene of a single-vehicle motorcycle crash on Thorburn Road in front of Brookside Intermediate in the Town of Portugal Cove-St. Philips on Sunday afternoon (May 24th).

Just before 1:30 p.m., firefighters with the Portugal Cove-St. Philips Volunteer Fire Department, along with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and NL Health Services, were called to the area after a motorcycle reportedly left the roadway and ended up in a ditch.

Upon arrival, firefighters located the motorcycle off the road leaking fluids, while the injured rider was being assessed at the scene. Firefighters and paramedics were seen treating the rider at the back of an SUV before the individual was placed onto a stretcher and transported to hospital with what were believed to be minor injuries.

Firefighters also used absorbent pads to soak up fluids leaking from the motorcycle into a nearby river in an effort to prevent further environmental impact.

The motorcyclist was believed to have been travelling toward St. Philips prior to leaving the roadway and coming to rest in the ditch.

Traffic in the area was reduced to one alternating lane while emergency crews handled the scene.
