JUNE 12th)
One person has died and three others were injured following a serious single-vehicle rollover crash in St. John’s during the early morning hours of Friday.
Emergency crews were called to Mayor Avenue between Empire Avenue and Newtown Road at approximately 1:30 a.m. after reports of a serious collision. Firefighters with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department, officers with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC), and paramedics with NL Health Services all responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, first responders located a heavily damaged vehicle that had struck a utility pole and a fence before coming to rest. The force of the crash caused extensive damage to the vehicle.
Firefighters were required to use hydraulic rescue tools to extricate one of the four occupants from the wreckage. Three occupants were transported to hospital with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. A fourth occupant succumbed to their injuries as a result of the collision.
The RNC’s Traffic Services Unit and Collision Investigation Team were immediately engaged and conducted an extensive roadside investigation that continued for several hours following the crash.
As of 10:30 a.m. Friday, Mayor Avenue remained closed to traffic while investigators continued their work.
Police said the driver failed a roadside screening test and was issued a licence suspension. A criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash remains ongoing.
No additional details have been released at this time.
In a statement, the RNC extended its sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
Collision reconstructionists are seeking witnesses and any video footage from the area, including CCTV, dash-camera, or cell phone recordings captured in the moments leading up to or immediately following the collision.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the RNC at 709-729-8000.
