(June 15)
At approximately 6:30 p.m. on June 14, the Torbay Volunteer Fire Department (TVFD), along with other emergency services, were called to a serious residential structure fire on Woodbridge Lane in Torbay.
A large plume of black smoke could be seen as emergency crews responded to the scene. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a rapidly growing fire that quickly escalated and engulfed the entire structure.
Recognizing the severity of the incident, the Torbay Volunteer Fire Department immediately requested assistance from the Pouch Cove Volunteer Fire Department and the Portugal Cove–St. Philip’s Volunteer Fire Department. As the blaze intensified, the home experienced numerous partial collapses, with large sections of the structure falling away.
With no hydrants available in the area, multiple fire apparatus were used in a water shuttle operation, transporting water to the scene to support firefighting efforts.
The residence was completely destroyed along with at least two vehicles located inside the garage.
Torbay Fire Chief Rodney Gaudet confirmed at the scene that no one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.
One firefighter from the Pouch Cove Volunteer Fire Department was assessed at the scene by paramedics, but did not appear to have sustained any serious injuries.
An excavator was called to the scene due to the type of structure and its contents, assisting crews as firefighting operations continued.
Woodbridge Lane remained closed for several hours while firefighters worked to extinguish hotspots and secure the scene. Torbay firefighters cleared the scene and returned to the station around 1 a.m. leaving the scene with the RNC.
