The provincial government is expanding support for residents in Conception Bay North as recovery continues following this year’s wildfires.
On Thursday, Premier Tony Wakeham announced that the Temporary Housing Assistance Program has been extended to March 31, 2026. The program provides financial support and temporary housing for families who lost their homes, and the extension is intended to give residents more stability while long-term housing solutions are developed.
To further guide recovery along the North Shore, the Premier has established a new Cabinet Committee on Wildfire Recovery and Safety. The committee will work with community leaders, residents, and emergency partners to identify needs and coordinate supports, including financial, social, and health-related assistance.
Members of the new committee include:
- Helen Conway Ottenheimer, Minister of Justice and Public Safety (Chair)
- Chris Tibbs, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs and Minister of Environment, Conservation and Climate Change
- Craig Pardy, Minister of Finance, President of Treasury Board and Minister of Seniors
- Joedy Wall, Minister of Social Supports and Well-Being
Minister Conway Ottenheimer and Carbonear-Trinity-Bay de Verde MHA Riley Balsom have already met with leaders from both incorporated and unincorporated communities to hear directly from those affected. Government says those discussions will help shape recovery priorities.
Premier Wakeham also committed to matching the funds raised during the recent We Stand Guard Once More Benefit Concert, effectively doubling the contribution toward local recovery efforts.
In addition to immediate supports, the provincial government says it is reviewing wildfire response measures following this year’s events. Areas under consideration include hiring wildland firefighters earlier in the season, providing additional training and equipment for volunteer firefighters, and ensuring water bombers are fully operational and ready when needed.
Government officials say these combined efforts are aimed at helping affected families rebuild while strengthening wildfire readiness across the province.
