RNC UPGRADES CHARGES AFTER 6-YEAR-OLD BOY DIES

The collision occurred at approximately 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, July 23th, at the intersection of Thorburn Road and Larkhall Street in St. John’s. The RNC’s Operational Patrol Services and the RNC Accident Investigation Unit responded after receiving reports that a child had been struck by a vehicle. Police said the suspect vehicle fled the scene before officers arrived.

The child was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Accident Investigation and Forensic Identification Services were called in to assist with the investigation.

According to police, information provided by a member of the public allowed officers to quickly locate the suspect vehicle and arrest the 32-year-old driver. Police said the driver failed a roadside screening test before being taken to RNC Headquarters, where he also failed a breath test.

Tyler Julian Day was initially charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm, failing to remain at the scene resulting in bodily harm, operating a vehicle over the legal limit, and breaching a probation order. Police also determined he was wanted on outstanding warrants. His driver’s licence was suspended, his vehicle was impounded, and he was held in custody to appear in court.

On Thursday, July 30, the RNC announced that the six-year-old boy had succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the collision.

As a result, the charges against Day were upgraded on Wednesday, July 29, to impaired driving causing death, failure to remain at the scene of an accident causing death, operating over the legal limit causing death, dangerous operation causing death, and criminal negligence causing death.

Day is scheduled to appear in court today.
