The St. John’s Firefighters Association is reminding residents to help keep their neighbourhoods safe this winter by ensuring fire hydrants remain clear and accessible after snowfalls.

Heavy snow and drifting conditions can quickly bury hydrants, making them difficult to locate during an emergency. Fire officials say blocked or hidden hydrants can slow firefighters’ access to water when every second counts.

To help prevent delays, residents and business owners are encouraged to clear the hydrant closest to their property.

The association recommends:

- Clearing at least three feet of space around the hydrant

- Shovelling snow down to the ground

- Creating a clear path from the hydrant to the street

Firefighters say the simple task only takes a few minutes but can make a life-saving difference for neighbours, families, and first responders.

Residents are thanked for doing their part to support community safety throughout the winter months.
