Emergency crews responded to a single-vehicle crash on Kelsey Drive near Walmart in St. John’s on Friday afternoon (May 15th).
At approximately 3:00 p.m., firefighters with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD), along with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) and NL Health Services (NLHS), were called to the scene after an SUV left the roadway and crashed into a Metrobus shelter, destroying it.
When emergency crews arrived, they located an SUV, which was extensively damaged and found one injured person. Firefighters and paramedics assessed the person at the scene before loading them onto a stretcher and transporting them by ambulance to hospital with what were described as non-life-threatening injuries.
A second person at the scene was also assessed by firefighters and paramedics and wrapped in a blanket for warmth. That individual did not appear to be seriously injured.
Traffic on Kelsey Drive was reduced to one lane in both directions while emergency personnel managed the scene and conducted their investigation.
Officers with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Traffic Services East and Collision Investigations Team responded and carried out a detailed investigation into the crash. The vehicle was reportedly travelling northbound on Kelsey Drive before it left the roadway and struck the shelter.
