(June 20th)
Firefighters responded to a second fire in less than 24 hours at a campsite in Cochrane Pond Park on Saturday evening.
At about 6:30 p.m. on June 20, firefighters with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD), along with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) and NL Health Services, were called to a reported structure fire at a campsite in Cochrane Pond Park off Northern Pond Road.
Upon arrival, firefighters located an active fire inside a shed on the property. The same campsite was the scene of a fire less than 24 hours earlier.
Crews gained access to the shed and worked to extinguish the blaze, while also ensuring that all remaining hotspots were fully extinguished.
The shed sustained extensive damage as a result of the fire. No injuries were reported.
The latest incident marks the second fire at the campsite in less than 24 hours. The first fire was reported during the early morning hours of Saturday at approximately 1:30 a.m. That blaze destroyed a vehicle and recreational vehicles located on the property.
The RNC is once again investigating the cause of the fire.
The incidents have renewed safety concerns surrounding Cochrane Pond Park, which was closed by the City of St. John’s a few years ago.
