Emergency crews were called to the scene of a vehicle fire on Northern Pond Road Sunday evening, where an SUV was found fully engulfed in flames.

At approximately 7:20 p.m. on December 28 (Sunday), firefighters with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD), along with members of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) and NL Health Services (NLHS), responded to reports of a vehicle fire just west of the Paddy’s Pond overpass.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered an SUV completely consumed by fire. Crews quickly deployed an attack line and were able to extinguish the blaze within minutes; however, the vehicle was completely destroyed.

According to witnesses at the scene, they had passed earlier while heading to a nearby store and observed an individual standing next to the SUV. They then continued up the road and noticed a pickup truck slowly reversing toward the individual. At that time, there was no sign of fire. When they returned approximately 20 minutes later, emergency crews were on scene and the vehicle was fully engulfed.

No injuries were reported.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire.
