VEHICLE FIRE BRIEFLY HALTS TCH TRAFFIC TUESDAY AFTERNOON

A vehicle was destroyed by fire Tuesday afternoon on the Trans-Canada Highway, also known as the Outer Ring Road, in St. John’s.

Shortly after 1:15 p.m. on September 1st, firefighters with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department, along with personnel from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and NL Health Services, were called to the scene between the Kenmount Road and cloverleaf.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke and an active fire billowing from a vehicle parked on the shoulder of the highway.

Firefighters quickly deployed an attack line and made quick work of the fire. Despite their efforts, the vehicle was destroyed.

Due to the active fire and heavy smoke, the westbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway were completely closed for a period of time to allow emergency crews to work safely.

Once the fire was brought under control and firefighters cleared the highway, the westbound lanes were reopened.

There did not appear to be any injuries as a result of the fire.
