First responders were kept busy throughout Tuesday, October 6th, responding to several (9) motor vehicle collisions and other incidents across the metro area.

At approximately 8:35 a.m., firefighters with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD), paramedics with NL Health Services and Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) officers responded to a collision on Columbus Drive northbound between Bay Bulls Road and Topsail Road in St. John’s. There were no serious injuries.

Minutes later, at approximately 8:45 a.m., crews responded to a rear-end collision involving at least two vehicles on Columbus Drive northbound between Captain Whalen Drive and Blackmarsh Road. One vehicle sustained extensive front-end damage. There were no serious injuries.

At approximately 9:15 a.m., a police-related incident on the Team Gushue Highway at the George’s Pond Road overpass resulted in a full closure of the southbound highway from George’s Pond Road to Topsail Road. NFLD Bulletin was at the scene and observed RNC Police Dog Services conducting a search in the area, while officers searched a four-door red Honda Civic that was facing the wrong way on the on-ramp to the Team Gushue Highway southbound. The highway was reopened shortly afterward, although the ramp remained closed for an extended period. At least one person was seen in police custody and was assessed by paramedics before being transported to hospital. Their condition is unknown. NFLD Bulletin has reached out to the RNC for further information and is awaiting a response.

At approximately 9:20 a.m., emergency crews responded to an apparent single-vehicle crash on the Outer Ring Road eastbound off-ramp to Portugal Cove Road northbound. The vehicle crashed into a guard rail and sustained extensive damage. The ramp was closed briefly before being reopened to allow traffic to move through slowly. There did not appear to be any serious injuries.

At approximately 9:45 a.m., SJRFD firefighters and RNC officers responded to an alleged threat at Atlantic Place on Water Street in downtown St. John’s. Water Street was closed to traffic and the building was evacuated while officials searched and cleared the building. The building was later deemed clear, allowing those who had been evacuated to return inside. No further information was immediately available regarding the incident.

The afternoon brought several more collisions.

At approximately 1:00 p.m., emergency crews responded to a collision at the intersection of Kelsey Drive and Messenger Drive in St. John’s. One vehicle sustained extensive passenger-side damage, with no injuries reported.

At approximately 1:20 p.m., crews responded to a two-vehicle collision at Military Road and Kings Road, also known as Rawlins Cross in St. John’s. Both vehicles sustained moderate to extensive damage, with no serious injuries.

At approximately 4:15 p.m., emergency crews responded to a rear-end collision involving at least two vehicles on Kenmount Road westbound, directly in front of Kelsey’s restaurant in St. John’s. At least one vehicle sustained extensive damage. There were no serious injuries.

At approximately 4:50 p.m., crews responded to another rear-end collision involving at least two vehicles at Torbay Road and Karon Drive in Torbay. At least one vehicle sustained extensive damage, with no apparent serious injuries.
