Nine Separate Collisions Affect Traffic Across Metro Region on Friday

Emergency crews responded to a series of at least 9 separate motor vehicle collisions across the metro region on Friday (Jan. 20), keeping firefighters, paramedics and police busy throughout the day and into the late evening hours.
The first incident was reported just after 9:00 a.m. at the Trans Canada Highway and Pitts Memorial Drive (Cloverleaf) in St. John’s. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene; however, further information on the collision was not available.
At 11:50 a.m., crews were called to MacDonald Drive in front of the Kenny’s Pond Retirement Community following reports of a crash. Firefighters with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department arrived to find two SUVs involved in a T-bone collision, with extensive damage to both vehicles. Firefighters and paramedics with NL Health Services assessed those involved. It remains unclear if anyone was transported to hospital.
At approximately, at 1:10 p.m., emergency crews were called to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Topsail Road and Columbus Drive in St. John’s. Both vehicles had been moved out of the intersection prior to firefighters’ arrival and sustained minor to moderate damage. Occupants were assessed at the scene, though it is unclear if any were taken to hospital.
At approximately 1:40 p.m., a three-vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of Kevin Parsons Highway and Indian Meal Line in Torbay. Firefighters arrived to find a car and pickup truck with extensive damage, along with a third vehicle that sustained minor damage. Information on injuries or hospital transports was not immediately available.
Another collision was reported at 2:10 p.m. in the area of the Outer Ring Road and Allendale Road in St. John’s. Few details were available at the time.
Emergency crews were again called into action at 2:30 p.m. following a collision involving an SUV and a Metrobus at the intersection of Ruby Line and Main Road in Goulds. Firefighters from the St. John’s Regional Fire Department’s Goulds and Mount Pearl stations responded and found the SUV with extensive front-end damage and the bus with minor to moderate damage. The SUV driver was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. There were no serious injuries reported among the bus driver or passengers. A second Metrobus was dispatched to transport passengers from the scene. The intersection was temporarily blocked but later reopened.
At 3:35 p.m., crews responded to another reported collision at the intersection of Merrymeeting Road and Aldershot Street in St. John’s. No additional details were available.
Later in the evening, at 9:55 p.m., firefighters responded to a minor two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Kenmount Road and Ladysmith Drive in St. John’s. Both vehicles were moved off the roadway and did not appear to have sustained extensive damage. No injuries were apparent, though it is unclear if anyone was transported to hospital.
Just 10 minutes later, at 10:05 p.m., emergency crews were called to a two-vehicle collision on Kenmount Road at the Topsail Road overpass in Paradise. Firefighters arrived to find an overturned SUV and a sedan, both with minor to moderate damage. Two occupants of the SUV were assessed by firefighters and paramedics and were not seriously injured. The driver of the sedan was unharmed. Eastbound traffic on Kenmount Road at the overpass was temporarily closed while crews worked at the scene. Officers with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary also responded.
Traffic at all scenes was impacted, with motorists experiencing slowdowns and temporary closures in some areas across the metro region. Authorities continue to remind drivers to use caution and adjust to road conditions to help prevent further incidents.
