Emergency crews responded to a motor vehicle collision on the Trans Canada Highway (TCH), also known as the Outer Ring Road (ORR), around 2:55 p.m. Tuesday afternoon (Nov. 25). The crash occurred in the westbound lanes between Allendale Road and Portugal Cove Road.
Upon arrival, first responders located one vehicle stopped in the middle of the highway with extensive rear-end damage and another vehicle in the ditch displaying significant front-end damage.
Firefighters with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD) assessed at least one individual at the scene while waiting for paramedics from NL Health Services. Once paramedics arrived, the individual was placed on a backboard, transferred to a stretcher, and taken to a nearby ambulance. The person was transported to hospital with injuries that were not immediately known. At the time, it was also unclear whether any additional individuals were transported for medical care.
The collision resulted in a complete closure of the westbound lanes, leaving traffic at a standstill and causing congestion that stretched for kilometres. Eastbound traffic also experienced significant delays.
Officers with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Patrol Services closed the westbound Portugal Cove Road on-ramp to allow the Collision Reconstructionist Team and Traffic Services Unit to investigate. Officers were observed documenting the scene using specialized collision-investigation equipment.
The RNC continues to investigate, and further information will be released when available.
