St. John's N.L. - April 17th - Drivers in Newfoundland and Labrador are being reminded that the deadline to remove studded tires from their vehicles is fast approaching. According to the province’s Highway Traffic Act, studded tires are only permitted on vehicles from November 1 to April 30 each year.
This means motorists have until Wednesday, April 30, 2025, to ensure their studded tires are removed. Failing to do so could result in fines or penalties, as the use of studded tires outside the allowed time frame is considered a violation of provincial law.
Studded tires, which are commonly used to improve traction on icy and snowy roads during the winter months, can cause damage to paved road surfaces when used during warmer seasons. The seasonal regulation is designed to balance road safety in winter with the need to protect road infrastructure in the spring and summer.
Drivers are encouraged to book tire change appointments with their local garages soon, as demand for seasonal tire services often increases in the days leading up to the deadline.
For more information, residents can visit the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s website or contact the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure.
