SUV Overturns Following Evening Collision

At approximately 6:50 p.m., firefighters with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD), along with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) and NL Health Services (NLHS), were called to the intersection of Ruth Avenue and Michener Avenue following reports of a crash involving two vehicles.
Upon arrival, firefighters located an SUV overturned on its roof and a sedan with extensive front-end damage. Crews quickly secured the scene, blocking all southbound lanes and reducing traffic flow in the immediate area to ensure the safety of emergency personnel.
Firefighters assessed all occupants involved in the collision until an ambulance with NL Health Services arrived. The ambulance response time was approximately 40 minutes after the initial call to emergency services. Despite the severity of the crash, no serious injuries were reported.
Traffic disruptions remained in place for some time, with Ruth Avenue southbound between Scammell Crescent and Fourth Street closed, while northbound traffic was reduced to a single lane. An alternating traffic pattern was also implemented on Michener Avenue.
During the incident, There was a concerning number of motorists using their cell phones while driving through the scene to document the crash, creating a significant safety hazard. An officer with the RNC was observed issuing a driver with what appeared to be a citation for using a mobile device behind the wheel.
